Bonneville High School Newsletter February - March 2010

La carta de noticias

Parents,

The second semester is now officially underway.  Any changes to student schedules will require parent signatures.  It is important for students and parents to understand the rules concerning dropping a class.  Students are allowed a three week window to make this decision without serious consequence to their GPA.  After three weeks a student who chooses to withdraw from a class will receive an F for the class.  Look over your student’s schedule; ask them how things are going and if the classes suit their needs.  Bring any problems to the counselors before the three week deadline.

Even as this semester unfolds we are making plans for next year. If you currently live outside the BHS attendance area, an Open Enrollment Application must be filed for your student.  These are due in my office by 4:00 pm on February 28th.  Our enrolment has grown each year.  In order to plan for this growth the school board is determined to follow state code regarding open enrollment procedures.  State code establishes a cut off date for these applications.  After receiving the requests, we will review them to make a determination regarding which applications will be accepted.  Parents will then be notified so they can make plans for the 2010 -2011 school year.

This time of year can be the most difficult for students and teachers.  Cold weather and the lack of sun take their toll on everyone.  This is a critical time to monitor your student’s grades and attitude.  A rocky start can lead to a disastrous finish.  Power School is a wonderful tool to monitor your student’s grades and attendance; it does not, however, replace the necessity of Parent Teacher Conferences and working with the teachers to keep your student on track.  Your involvement makes a significant difference.

Parents of 10th grade students, spring ISAT testing is just around the corner.  We plan to administer the test in April.  Teachers are working hard to provide students with the best chance of success.  Your help and encouragement are equally critical.  Please maintain an active role in your student’s educational process.  When test day arrives be sure your child gets enough sleep and eats a healthy breakfast. Sleep and nutrition are both essential to insure your student does their very best.  We are looking forward to this opportunity to measure students’ progress.

If your son or daughter is a senior this year, they should be working on their senior project.  I have visited each of the senior English classes to carefully review the requirements for the project with the students.  Each student received a binder with ideas, a framework, and the grading criteria for the project.  Oral presentations will occur on April 8, 15, and 22.  Students will be assigned one of these dates in March.  I invite all parents to attend the open house for the senior projects on May 3, starting at 7:00 pm in the school commons.

If you have questions about your student’s report card (included in this mailing) please contact an administrator, counselor, or teacher at the school.  I appreciate the opportunity to work with such a tremendous group of young people and your continued support.
